Kontras Quartet Selected as New Resident Quartet

Western Piedmont Symphony (WPS) is extremely pleased to announce the next Hickory Metro Resident Quartet—the Kontras Quartet. For the past year the Western Piedmont Symphony has auditioned string quartets from across the country to become the next resident string quartet.

The Kontras Quartet was founded in Chicago where all four members performed with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. The quartet has an international flavor. Violinist Dmitri Pogorelov is from Russia, violinist Francois Henkins is from South Africa, Violist Ai Ishida is from Japan, and cellist Jean Hatmaker is from Illinois. They have performed in numerous orchestral groups here and abroad, including solo performances.

The quartet members will be in and out over the summer--finding homes and getting settled. Kontras will be the featured quartet of the Friends of the Quartet Chamber Classics Series, the principal chairs of the WPS orchestra, and will perform a variety of outreach and educational programs throughout the Western Piedmont during their three year residency. Each member holds a Master’s Degree in Music and thoroughly enjoys teaching.

Western Piedmont Symphony is a grant recipient of the North Carolina Arts Council and a funded affiliate of the United Arts Council of Catawba County. Business offices are located on the SALT Block at 243 Third Avenue NE, Hickory. Business hours are 9:00 am until 5:00 pm daily.
