*”Maxine Swalin, known affectionately as the ‘mother of the North Carolina Symphony,’ lived her 106 years championing the beauty of great music and great art. She was an accomplished pianist, painter and writer who influenced the lives of countless North Carolinians. Whether she was handling details of a symphony visit to a small North Carolina town, raising funds for a worthy cause, or meditating in UNC’s Coker Arboretum with her brush and easel, she was always the advocate for what is good and beautiful. The Ciompi Quartet was one of Maxine Swalin’s favorite local ensembles.”
