Gerard Davis (Flemish painter, 1460-1523) Virgin & Mary with 4 Angels (image cropped for publication)
This preview has been provided by Christ Church Raleigh Sacred Music on the Square.
Bach’s Christmas Oratorio is one of the greatest sacred choral works ever written. Similar in size and scale (though far surpassing in symbolism and complexity) to the Messiah, it is composed of six large cantatas written for the period between Christmas Day and the feast of Epiphany. Each cantata makes use of a different set of instruments (flutes, recorders, various kinds of oboes, French horns, trumpets, timpani, strings, and organ), giving the work great color and diversity of sound. Due to its length, technical difficulty, and broad instrumentation, The Christmas Oratorio is rarely performed in its entirety, so don’t miss your chance to experience this great work. (Cantatas 1-3 will be performed on Friday night, and Cantatas 4-6 on Saturday afternoon).
