Oh, What a Lovely War!: By Joan Littlewood and The Thatre Workshop. Directed by Hope Alexander. A ‘musical entertainment’ from the 1960s anti-war era that highlights the universal view that World War One was a really, really bad idea. This production uses popular vaudevillian entertainment to tackle history from the point of view of the man-on-the-street. Oh, What a Lovely War!, an end of the pier pierrot show, combines a jaunty mix of song, dance, and comic sketches to satirize incompetent authorities, sidestep sentimentality, and ultimately throw into sharp relief the tragedies of war.
