Gregg Museum of Art & Design: Left-Handed Liberty

( Thu., Jan. 10, 2019 - Sun., Jun. 23, 2019 )

Gregg Museum of Art & Design, 1903 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, NC 27607

Program

The self-taught North Carolina artists featured in “Left-Handed Liberty” sometimes achieved recognition as innovative creative minds, but often started out exploring their art in deeply personal ways. They made art in their homes, their workshops, or while in prison; some were plagued by physical and emotional difficulties, and hard times. A few sold their art on the side to admirers and tourists, and some even used their own homes as their canvases or raw materials. The works exhibited in this show represent but a small portion of the works by these inspired and courageous artists collected over the years.
