( Tue., Mar. 19, 2019 )
Blowing Rock Art & History Museum (New Address), 159 Ginny Stevens Lane, Blowing Rock, NC 28605
At this session of Coffee with the Curator, we will be viewing pieces of art that are strongly influenced by the traditions and material culture of rural North Carolina communities. Many of the artists have faced extreme adversity and have relied heavily on their religious faith and creative impulses to get by. The common imagery within this collection of work explores a memory or a scene from the artist’s past. This need to record life’s events or replicate significant discoveries is a primal urge dating back to our beginnings as human. These pieces are primarily created by artists who have no formal training, freeing themselves from academic limitations and creating honest, and unique works of art.
Please join us and take a walk through the galleries with the Curator and get a behind-the-scenes look into Outsiders: The Inside Story of Folk Art. After the tour, guests are invited to converse and pose questions while enjoying complimentary coffee from Hatchet Coffee Co. and cookies courtesy of Appalachian Cookie Company.
This event is free for museum members and $5 for non-members.
