"Still-Life Masterpieces: A Visual Feast from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, features European and American paintings and decorative arts from the Renaissance to the present. Visually alluring, the still life has served as a means for artists through the centuries to test their artistic mettle and express often-profound ideas on time, life, and nature." "The selection of paintings is rich in tabletop arrays of luscious fruit and riotous flowers in myriad styles. There are so-called vanitas images that allude to the transience of life and works intended to fool the eye with their astonishing illusionism. In dialogue with the paintings are ceramics whose forms imitate vegetables or fish, ornamental silver, and whimsical jewelry—all superb examples of craftsmanship, design, and personal expression. Included in this exhibition are masterpieces by Manet, Renoir, and Cézanne, among many others."
